"After Glow" was built in two steps in the tradition of fully customized sailing yachts. The hull, designed by Sparkman and Stephens Naval Architect Firm was commercially laid at Sunward Yachts in NorthCarolina in 1984. The hull was then barged to the west coast of Florida in 1985 to begin what would be a 3 year outfit of the decks, cabins, interior, deck house, and machinery systems and components. "After Glow" was hull #1 of what would be 11 fully custom and semi-custom yachts based on the same platform. Final construction costs were $1,200,000.00. The finished yacht was then launched and commissioned officially in Bradenton, Florida in late 1988, and debuted in the New York Boat and Yahct Show as show center. According to the builder, over 300 prospective buyers boarded the yacht during the show. After several east coast boats shows, the vessel then made its virgin passage across the Gulf of Mexico for the Houston/Galveston Boat Show. "After Glow" has been written up in almost every major yachting magazine. And for good reason. The builder, Ed Deane, president of Deane Yachts, was a machinist by trade, and had owned many yachts over the years. What he incorporated into the building of "After Glow" was everything he envisioned for a yacht that could travel with long range operating characteristics, heavy seas capable, secure from pirates and invasion while traveling in third would regions, had sufficient redundancy in systems, and enough room aboard to enjoy extended periods of time out on open water, and oculd be maintained with ease despite numerous complicated systems. And we can tell you, after owning her for several years, that he succeeded. For example: *the hull is over 1 inch thick of solid fiberglass (absolutely no coring), which practically meets ice class standards *the hull below the water line is lead lined for noise attenuation *the full above the water line is lined with bullet resistant kevlar sheeting *the windows are bullet resistant Lexan *there is a 20,000# poured lead keel extending 7.2 feet below the waterline *fully separate fuel systems, 5 different water sources, 3 types of water pumping, 4 hot water sources *3 separate eletrical sources making 12v, 110v, 220v electricity (not including dockside capability) *complete air conditioning including all cabins, engien room, utility room and bridge * electrical chase access ports and hatches to and form every electrical, hydraulic, air and water system for service, repairs and changes *helm steering from the wheels, or autopilot override, or a backup mechanical tiller if the main engine fails, the 20kw generator has an electrical/mechanical clutch to engage the get-home drive jackshafts to operate the vessel at up to 4 knots *a 30 volume set of books containing every detail of construction of the electrical, fuel, hull, mechanical, hydraulic, air, and plumbing sytems. And more that we can print. But as practical as Mr. Deane was with creating a tough boat, he included incredible efforts to quality and luxury. There are hardwood floors, hardwood walls, and even hardwood ceilings. Every closet/locker aboard is air conditioned, lighted, and trimmed in cedar. We haven't seen wood joinery as nice as "After Glow" in boats costing 4 million dollars. And add a portugese bridge with protected companionways that circle the entire boat, 3 different ramp/gangway combinations for different docks, and a complete dance floor on the top of the main cabin, you can see wht "After Glow" is the place to hang out when we all meet up in the anchorages. Not to mention the fact that the yacht can make a full 26kw of electricity and stores more fresh water than most yachts hold in fuel
